IndiGo Halts Services to Hong Kong, Shanghai and Four Other Cities
IndiGo announced a temporary suspension of flights to six international destinations amid challenging market conditions.

IndiGo, India's leading airline, has announced the temporary suspension of flights to six international locations, including Hong Kong and Shanghai. This decision arises from what the airline describes as a 'traditionally softer demand' in the upcoming quarter and a challenging cost environment. The halted services will take effect starting July and are projected to continue until the end of September 2026.

In its official statement, the airline indicated that operations to Langkawi, Krabi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Siem Reap would cease from July 1 and July 3, respectively, until the end of September. Following this suspension, IndiGo is set to resume bookings for these routes beginning October 1, 2026; however, the airline has noted that it remains prepared to reinstate operations sooner if conditions improve.

This move follows a recent announcement from IndiGo regarding the indefinite suspension of its non-stop Mumbai-Manchester service, which will halt operations on August 31 this year. The airline cited ongoing international airspace constraints that have led to longer flight durations and increased operational costs as key factors in this decision. Moreover, IndiGo intends to return one of its six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, acquired through a damp lease from Norse Atlantic Airways.

Initially, the damp leasing of these aircraft aimed to support IndiGo's entry into the European market with plans for its own Airbus A350 services. However, the airline has faced significant industry challenges, including geopolitical situations in West Asia, rising aviation turbine fuel costs, airspace restrictions, and currency volatility. These factors have contributed to operating costs being excessively high compared to earlier projections.

IndiGo's statement highlighted that the latest adjustments are designed to align its capacity with current market conditions and demand trends. The airline emphasised its dedication to maintaining reliability and integrity across its global network.

As the situation evolves, IndiGo plans to continually assess operational costs and airspace limitations to navigate future challenges effectively. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the airline adapts quickly to changing conditions in the aviation landscape.
