IndiGo Fined Rs 22.2 Crore for Overstretched Crew and Cancellations
The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of Rs 22.2 crore (approximately £2.6 million) on IndiGo Airlines in response to widespread flight cancellations that occurred in December 2025. The penalty arises from an investigation revealing that the airline's crew members were being overstretched, adversely impacting operational efficiency.
The inquiry followed numerous complaints from passengers about delayed and cancelled flights during the busy holiday season. Many travellers expressed frustration as they experienced significant disruptions, leading to an increased investigation into the airline's practices.
The DGCA found that IndiGo had failed to provide adequate staffing for its operations, which resulted in its crew members being overburdened. This situation not only jeopardised the airline's service quality but also raised safety concerns. "We have noted that the airline's operational metrics indicated crew fatigue, which is unacceptable in this industry," said a DGCA spokesperson.
IndiGo, the largest carrier in India by market share, has been urged to make significant changes to its scheduling practices and improve its compensation strategies for its employees. The DGCA has emphasised the need for airlines to adhere to safety regulations and ensure that their operational practices do not compromise the wellbeing of their staff or passengers.
In a statement issued shortly after the penalty, IndiGo acknowledged the challenges faced and committed to revising crew scheduling policies. The airline stated, "We understand the importance of both operational efficiency and crew wellbeing, and will act promptly to address the concerns raised by DGCA."
Passengers who experienced cancellations or delays are encouraged to file complaints with the airline for compensation as per regulations. The DGCA has underscored that maintaining a high standard of customer service and safety is paramount for all airlines operating within Indian airspace.
This action against IndiGo may serve as a cautionary tale for other airlines concerning the necessity of adhering to staffing and safety regulations. As India’s rapidly growing aviation sector continues to expand, regulatory agencies will be closely monitoring compliance to ensure the protection of both crew members and passengers alike.
