Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Vande Bharat sleeper trains, enhancing connectivity between Kolkata and Guwahati.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the first sleeper service of the Vande Bharat Express train on January 18, 2026. The new train connects Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, to Guwahati, the largest city in Assam, offering passengers a modern and efficient travel option.

The introduction of sleeper coaches in the Vande Bharat fleet marks a significant expansion of the service, which previously only operated with chair cars. The sleeper trains are designed to enhance long-distance travel comfort. These trains boast modern amenities, including bio-vacuum toilets, onboard Wi-Fi, and entertainment options, aimed at providing a superior travel experience.

The launch event took place in Kolkata, with the Prime Minister highlighting the importance of enhancing railway infrastructure throughout India. “This train reflects our commitment to better connectivity and development across the country,” Modi stated during the ceremony.

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are expected to reduce travel time significantly between the two cities. Current travel on the same route often takes longer with traditional rail services, and the addition of sleeper coaches allows passengers to travel overnight comfortably.

In a related development, railway authorities have announced new cancellation policies specifically for the sleeper service. As per a report by The Times of India, passengers seeking to cancel their bookings will not be eligible for a refund if they attempt to do so within eight hours of the scheduled departure. This new rule has sparked discussion among travellers regarding its potential impact on ticket purchases and travel plans.

Local officials and railway authorities are optimistic that the new service will not only boost passenger numbers but also stimulate economic activity along the Kolkata to Guwahati corridor. The Vande Bharat trains are seen as a key component in Indian Railways' broader efforts to modernise and enhance service reliability.

The introduction of sleeper services in the Vande Bharat fleet aligns with India's ongoing initiatives to improve public transport and provide efficient services to passengers across the nation. As the demand for faster and more reliable train services grows, the Vande Bharat Express aims to become a flagship service for Indian Railways.

Overall, the launch of the first sleeper Vande Bharat train is a significant step in enhancing long-distance travel in India and improving railway infrastructure in the region.
