Indian Embassy Advises Citizens to Stay Indoors Amid Tensions in Iran
As a deadline set by United States President Donald Trump concerning Iran approaches, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued a safety advisory for Indian nationals in the country. The embassy recommended that citizens prioritise their safety and remain in their current locations for at least 48 hours, urging them to avoid unnecessary movement, particularly near sensitive sites such as military and electrical installations.
In addition to staying indoors, the advisory cautioned against residing in upper floors of tall buildings, likely as a precaution against potential military strikes. Indian nationals were told to maintain close communication with the embassy, especially regarding any highway travel, which should only occur with official guidance. Those accommodated in hotels arranged by the embassy are specifically instructed to remain inside and keep in regular contact with the embassy staff on-site.
The advisory stated, "Those in Embassy-hired hotels should stay put indoors while maintaining regular contact with on-site embassy teams. All are requested to monitor official updates closely. The Embassy's emergency numbers...remain operational," it noted.
The urgent communication came soon after President Trump alluded to severe and immediate ramifications for Iran, suggesting catastrophic outcomes in a message described as one of his strongest warnings. He posted on his platform, Truth Social, highlighting the gravity of the situation, stating, "A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will."
Despite the escalating tension evident in his comments, Trump did not provide confirmation of any definitive military action, indicating that any potential strike could still be revised depending on how the situation evolves. He characterised the ongoing crisis as "the most important moment in the long and complex history of the world," adding historical context to the tensions surrounding the situation.
Trump expressed hopes for significant political change in Iran, declaring, "However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?" He referenced the longstanding issues of "extortion, corruption, and death" in Iran, expressing a desire for a better future for the Iranian populace.
The heightened rhetoric from Washington is connected to existing tensions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Trump has repeatedly warned Iran of severe military action, particularly aimed at its energy infrastructure, should the critical maritime route remain closed beyond the set deadline of April 7. Although Iran was initially afforded 48 hours to comply with US demands, this timeline has since been extended multiple times, leading to a total of 408 hours. While these extensions imply a certain level of diplomatic flexibility, they have also resulted in increased uncertainty regarding the situation.
Commentators are observing that Trump's strategyâcharacterised by sharp threats and shifting deadlinesâhas left many guessing about the potential for US action and its timing.
