Iran Claims US Airman Rescue Concealed Uranium Theft Attempt
Iran's foreign ministry suggests US operation to rescue an airman may have concealed an attempt to steal enriched uranium, raising significant concerns.

Iran's foreign ministry has raised suspicions regarding the United States military operation to rescue an American airman, asserting it may have served as a cover for an attempt to steal enriched uranium. The spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry, Esmaeil Baqaei, expressed scepticism about the claimed location of the airman's rescue, questioning the validity of the operation.

According to reports, the American pilot had been missing after the downing of a United States F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet over southern Iran on April 3. The incident marks the first time a US fighter jet was shot down in the region since the onset of recent hostilities. President of the United States Donald Trump announced the successful operation, stating on his social media platform that the wounded airman had been rescued from deep within the mountains of Iran.

However, Baqaei contended that the area purportedly linked to the airman's presence was significantly distant from the site of the alleged landing operation in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province. He concluded his statements by suggesting, “The possibility that this was a deception operation to steal enriched uranium should not be ignored at all.” Baqaei labelled the rescue mission as a “disaster” for the United States.

In the efforts to secure the airman, hundreds of special forces personnel alongside multiple US warplanes, helicopters, and comprehensive intelligence resources were deployed. Reports from the New York Times indicate that US forces encountered resistance from Iranian military convoys during the operation. Two transport aircraft designated to evacuate the personnel were rendered inoperative at a remote base in Iran, prompting the decision to deploy alternative aircraft for the extraction.

Consequently, the US forces detonated the disabled planes to prevent them from being captured by Iranian forces. The situation represents a significant escalation in tensions in the region, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by military operations in hostile territories amidst rampant speculation surrounding their motives and objectives.
