Indian Army Makes Historic Debut at US Special Forces Exercise
The Indian Army participated for the first time in a major US Special Forces exercise, highlighting its commitment to global security partnerships.

A senior delegation from the Indian Armed Forces, led by Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command, recently took part in the Special Operations Forces (SOF) Week 2026, held in Tampa, Florida, from May 18 to May 21, 2026. This marked a significant milestone as it was the first time India participated in one of the world's premier Special Operations events.

India's involvement emphasises its increasing importance as a global security ally and reinforces its dedication to enhancing multilateral defence collaborations. The SOF Week, co-hosted by the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and the Global SOF Foundation, attracted over 28,000 attendees, featuring more than 850 exhibitors and representatives from over 70 countries. This made it one of the largest international platforms focused on Special Operations Forces.

Throughout the event, the Indian delegation engaged in high-level strategic discussions and bilateral meetings with senior Special Operations commanders from various nations. Members of the delegation were also able to observe advanced capability demonstrations and participate in defence industry exhibitions. These interactions provided a vital opportunity for sharing operational insights and strengthening defence partnerships.

For the Indian Army, the participation in the biannual capability demonstration, known as CAPEX, was particularly noteworthy. The event, a key feature of SOF Week, showcased a live operational environment in which US Special Operations Forces worked alongside contingents from ten partner nations. The USSOCOM Capability Demonstration, named "Battle in the Bay," took place on May 20 at the Tampa waterfront.

India's involvement in these operations displayed the Indian Special Forces' expertise in counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare, as well as high-altitude and jungle warfare operations. Officials noted that this participation constitutes a significant advancement in international Special Operations cooperation and reflects India's growing role in global Special Operations strategy, interoperability, and capability development.
