External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will chair a Quad meeting, focusing on the Indo-Pacific region amid ongoing international concerns.

India is set to host a meeting of the Quad Foreign Ministers on May 26, 2026, in New Delhi. This gathering comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump's recent trip to China and aims to discuss a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The meeting will be chaired by India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and will include senior officials from the United States, Australia, and Japan.

As per a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, this meeting will follow U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's bilateral engagements in India. Minister Rubio is expected to visit several cities in India, including Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Agra, commencing on May 23, 2026.

The Foreign Ministers from Australia and Japan—Penny Wong and Toshimitsu Motegi, respectively—are anticipated to arrive in Delhi on May 25, 2026, in preparation for the Quadrilateral discussions. The focus will primarily be on advancing cooperation in priority areas as envisaged by the Quad framework, which aims to uphold security and freedom in the Indo-Pacific.

The ministers will build on conversations that took place during their previous meeting in Washington, D.C., on July 1, 2025, laying out strategic objectives that have been sidelined in recent months. The upcoming meeting will address several pressing issues, including the ramifications of President Trump's China visit and ongoing tensions surrounding the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for international trade.

Additionally, Rubio's recent discussions in Sweden with NATO allies mentioned the need for caution against Iran's proposed tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz. He is likely to promote U.S. initiatives focused on critical minerals and oil exports while seeking coordinated support from Quad partners to ensure free navigation in this vital waterway.

Reports indicate that the meeting may also touch upon a recent incident involving U.S. military action against an Iranian vessel near Sri Lankan waters, a rare occurrence of military conflict in the region. This incident is significant given the Quad's commitment to ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Moreover, the visiting ministers from Australia and Japan, along with Secretary Rubio, are expected to hold bilateral discussions with Minister Jaishankar and potentially meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, further solidifying the diplomatic ties within the Quad framework. The Ministry of External Affairs has expressed hope for hosting a Quad Summit later this year, contingent on the availability of the leaders involved.
