Central government offices in New Delhi will close on May 28, 2026, for Eid-ul-Azha, following a revision from an earlier date of May 27.

On 22 May 2026, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions announced a change to the date of the Eid-ul-Azha holiday for central government offices in Delhi. The holiday has been moved from the previously announced date of May 27 to May 28. This decision is based on the expected sighting of the moon, which marks the beginning of the festival also known as Id-ul-Zuha or Bakrid.

The ministry confirmed in an official statement that all administrative offices located in Delhi/New Delhi would observe the closure on 28 May 2026. This revision affects only central government offices and had been communicated following the original announcement included in the annual holiday calendar.

Eid-ul-Azha is one of the significant festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide, commemorating the principles of sacrifice and devotion. The exact date of the festival varies depending on the lunar calendar and local moon sightings, which can lead to differences in observance across various regions.

As Bakri Eid approaches, the Delhi government has implemented strict regulations to maintain public order and sanitation during the celebrations. Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra has highlighted the importance of adhering to specific rules related to animal sacrifice and waste disposal.

Mishra stated that anyone found violating the regulations concerning the slaughter of prohibited animals could face criminal charges. The Delhi government's Development Department has issued guidelines to ensure that illegal animal sacrifices are closely monitored and that public spaces are kept clean during the festivities.

The minister expressed, "Sacrificing cattle, cows, calves, camels, or any other prohibited animals in Delhi is completely illegal, and infringements will lead to legal repercussions." The measures aim to ensure that the festivities occur respectfully and in accordance with legal standards.

As the date of Eid-ul-Azha approaches, preparations are underway, with authorities keen to ensure the event is celebrated harmoniously across the national capital and beyond.
