Four Family Members Dead in Mumbai Food Poisoning Incident
A suspected food poisoning case in the Pydhonie area of Mumbai has resulted in the tragic loss of four family members, raising concerns about food safety. Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen Dokadia (35), and their two daughters, Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13), were found dead after eating a meal that included biryani and watermelon.
Initial reports indicate that the family had shared a meal with relatives at their home on the night of April 25. Following dinner, which was served around 10:30 PM, they later consumed watermelon at approximately 1 AM. By early morning, around 5 to 6 AM, the family began experiencing severe symptoms including vomiting and diarrhoea.
A doctor residing in the same building was alerted to the situation. Upon arrival, he found the family in a perilous state. "I found them inside, including the two daughters. They were drowsy, and one daughter was gasping for breath and had no pulse," he described. Efforts to revive the girl through cardiopulmonary resuscitation were unsuccessful, and she was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravin Munde confirmed that an unnatural death report has been filed at the JJ Marg police station, indicating the gravity of the situation. Following the family’s sudden illness, they were transported to a nearby hospital, which later referred them to JJ Hospital. Unfortunately, all four succumbed to their ailments during medical intervention.
The local community has been left in shock, with Mayor Waris Pathan of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen calling for a thorough investigation. He expressed concern, stating, "This is a heartbreaking incident. It is critical that the government investigate the cause of these deaths and publish their findings."
The police have recorded a case of accidental death and commenced an investigation, collecting food and biological samples during the postmortem to identify the cause of the fatalities. DCP Munde elaborated that the postmortem had been conducted, and that the samples are currently under examination.
While food poisoning is the primary suspect, authorities have not ruled out other causes. Contaminated food, particularly pesticide use or spoilage, is a pressing concern given the indications of severe food poisoning and reports of potential chemical adulteration of food products.
Local health officials are advising residents to exercise caution when consuming fruits, especially during the summer when produce such as watermelon is in high demand. Experts recommend purchasing from reliable sources and ensuring that fruits are thoroughly washed before consumption.
The investigation continues, with officials urging the public to remain vigilant regarding food safety. Forensic reports, which will provide a definitive cause of death, are pending.
