India Launches Operation Amistad to Aid Earthquake-Devastated Venezuela
India has initiated 'Operation Amistad' to provide humanitarian aid to Venezuela in response to a series of devastating earthquakes that struck the country on June 24, 2026. These earthquakes, measured at magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in significant loss of life and extensive injuries, with reports indicating at least 1,430 fatalities and over 3,360 injured. Many remain unaccounted for, as rescue teams continue to search for survivors amid widespread destruction.
In a bid to assist the Venezuelan government and its citizens, India dispatched two Boeing C-17 Globemaster aircraft from the Indian Air Force. The planes left on June 26, 2026, laden with essential relief supplies, medical equipment, and personnel. The aid package includes a 41-member rescue team from the 60 Para Field Hospital, which comprises nine medical officers and additional experienced personnel.
The Ministry of External Affairs announced that the aircraft were equipped with approximately 35 tonnes of relief supplies, including medicines, medical equipment, and two portable hospitals known as BHISHM cubes. This significant operation underscores India's commitment to international humanitarian assistance and its principle of global solidarity, known as 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', meaning 'the world is one family'.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar remarked on social media platform X, stating, 'Operation Amistad underway! Two IAF C-17s took off today for Venezuela with urgent assistance to support their post-earthquake relief efforts.' He affirmed India's commitment to support Venezuela during this challenging time, expressing condolences to the affected families and hopes for a speedy recovery for the injured.
The earthquakes are among the strongest recorded in Venezuela in over a century and were felt across the region, exacerbating an already critical situation in a nation facing economic turmoil and political instability. Initial reports indicate that alongside the significant loss of life, many buildings and infrastructure were severely damaged, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
As of the latest updates, the situation remains dire, with authorities continuing to search for thousands of missing persons, and rescue crews racing against time to aid those trapped beneath collapsed structures. India’s rapid deployment of aid reflects a growing commitment to participate in global humanitarian operations, reinforcing diplomatic ties and showcasing its role on the world stage.
