Ram Mandir Donation Theft Case: New Insights and Investigations

New information has surfaced in the alleged theft of donations for the Ram Mandir, suggesting the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was aware of potential misappropriation prior to it being made public. Sources indicate that on June 5, representatives from the Trust, following directives from General Secretary Champat Rai, collaborated with police to investigate the residence of Avinash Shukla, one of the suspects. Reports claim that cash was recovered during this search, indicating that the Trust had previously alerted authorities.

Despite this early action, the Trust did not file an official complaint with the police at the time. It has been suggested that the operations carried out on June 5 were informal and not based on an officially registered First Information Report (FIR). The matter only came to light publicly on June 7, raising concerns about the delay before formal proceedings commenced.

Newly circulated CCTV footage purportedly related to the incident shows police officers escorting Avinash Shukla to a vehicle after detaining him. The clip, lasting 24 seconds, appears to show him carrying a black bag, which sources allege contained the cash found during the earlier search. The verification of the footage's authenticity and the events depicted has yet to be substantiated independently.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement clarifying the timeline between the initial police search and the filing of the case. Additionally, a photograph of another suspect, Ramashankar Mishra, has been made available to the public. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is examining the alleged financial irregularities previously reported finding significant lapses in the management of donations at the Ayodhya temple.

The investigation has highlighted inefficiencies regarding cash handling, employee verification processes, and CCTV surveillance. The State Bank of India, responsible for managing the donations, is under scrutiny due to personnel hired through a private agency, with some positions reportedly linked to Trust officials. The probe has expanded to include investigations into land acquisitions and procurement related to the temple's construction.

In a statement from police sources, it was noted that the Ayodhya Police conducted simultaneous searches at the residences of all eight individuals detained in relation to the alleged donation embezzlement. These operations took place two days after a court ordered all accused to be held in judicial custody until June 29. Police plan to request custody extensions for the suspects when they reappear before the court.

The Uttar Pradesh government established the Special Investigation Team on June 13 at the request of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, following allegations regarding the misappropriation of donations for the Ram Temple. Tensions escalated on June 7 when Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, brought attention to reports that a substantial amount of donation money was unaccounted for, pressuring courts to investigate.

In reaction to these allegations, Alok Kumar, the international president of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), accused the Samajwadi Party and Congress of attempting to politicise the controversy for electoral gains ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The situation has ignited a renewed political dispute, with Yadav targeting the Uttar Pradesh government while the VHP calls for an open investigation.

Akhilesh Yadav emphasised he would visit the Ram Mandir after completing a campaign involving the Shiv temple at Kedareswar Dham in Etawah. He questioned how such irregularities could remain unnoticed despite the frequent visits of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to Ayodhya, referring to the situation as an example of 'darkness beneath the lamp.'

Reacting to these statements, Alok Kumar insisted on the necessity of a thorough and transparent investigation, suggesting that no individuals implicated in the case should receive any protection. He also stated that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is keen for complete transparency and advocated for those found culpable to be brought to justice swiftly. Kumar challenged Yadav's proposal to create a 'Siyaram Dham' if the party were to assume power, questioning why similar initiatives were not pursued during Yadav's previous term in office. He concluded that prompt legal action against those responsible is essential to restore public trust in the management of the donations.
