PM Modi Highlights Indian Ocean Cooperation During Seychelles Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Seychelles, articulated India's vision for the Indian Ocean as a hub of opportunity, emphasising both maritime security and economic prosperity. Speaking after talks with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie on June 28, 2026, Prime Minister Modi described the Indian Ocean as a shared home that requires collective responsibility for its safety, sustainability, and growth.

"Our vision is to make the Indian Ocean an Ocean of Opportunity," he remarked, highlighting that partnerships should be rooted in respect and trust, not size.

The high-level discussions covered a range of issues concerning bilateral cooperation and regional matters of mutual concern. Prime Minister Modi stated, "We will share India’s successful experience in Digital Public Infrastructure with Seychelles," indicating a commitment to improve the island’s digital landscape.

The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of defence and security collaboration, asserting that the security of both India and Seychelles are interconnected. "We will continue to explore new opportunities for the industries of both our countries," he added, focusing on enhancing connectivity.

Accompanying Modi were notable figures from the Indian government, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The Seychelles delegation included key officials such as Vice-President Sebastien Pillay and Foreign Affairs Minister Barry Faure.

As a symbol of his commitment, Prime Minister Modi was awarded the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon,' Seychelles' highest honour for leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development. The Prime Minister dedicated this accolade to all nations fighting against climate change.

Earlier that day, Modi received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the State House, welcomed by President Herminie and Cabinet Ministers. This reception illustrates the enduring friendship and diplomatic ties between India and Seychelles.

During his three-day State Visit, Prime Minister Modi is also set to participate in Seychelles' Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations, marking 50 years since the country's independence from the United Kingdom in 1976. The Prime Minister's visit include cultural engagements, notably a trip to the Seychelles National Botanical Garden.

In a significant gesture, India gifted Seychelles a 'Made in India' Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) named PS LESPWAR, along with several ambulances and utility vehicles, to enhance maritime security and patrol capabilities. This handover at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base was attended by President Herminie, reaffirming the strategic partnership between the two nations.

According to India's Ministry of External Affairs, this initiative further symbolizes the expanding collaboration between India and Seychelles, especially concerning maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. The increasing defence cooperation reflects a mutual commitment to peace and stability in the region, as both countries continue to strengthen their diplomatic relationship.
