India's Kerala State to Be Renamed Keralam to Reflect Local Language
The Indian state of Kerala will undergo a significant change as its name shifts from Kerala to Keralam, following approval by the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This alteration is intended to align the English representation of the state with its pronunciation in Malayalam, the primary language spoken by its approximately 35 million residents.
In Malayalam, the term Keralam translates to 'land of coconut trees,' with 'Kera' meaning coconut and 'alam' denoting land. Kerala is known for its vast coconut production, accounting for nearly 45% of India's total yield. The planned name change has garnered unanimous support from various political parties within the Kerala state assembly, with advocates describing it as an affirmation of linguistic authenticity and dignity.
Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala, has emphasised that the state should be identified by the name used by its inhabitants. This sentiment was echoed by locals, such as Priya Matthew, a schoolteacher in Kozhikode, who remarked, "Keralam is the name we use in Malayalam, so for us using it in English feels more natural and familiar."
Despite its broad support, the name transition is expected to present logistical challenges. The official records will need updates reflecting the new name, resulting in extensive changes across governmental documents, signages, websites, and other formal communications. According to comments made by officials, this process is likely to be time-consuming and financially burdensome. However, the specific costs associated with the name change have yet to be determined.
The name change follows a trend in India where colonial-era names are being amended to reclaim indigenous identities. Examples of such changes include Mumbai from Bombay, Chennai from Madras, and Kolkata from Calcutta. Once the proposal is passed in the national parliament, Keralam will officially be adopted in English records.
Shashi Tharoor, a senior member of the Congress party, expressed his support for the renaming, while also questioning the implications for terms typically used for residents, such as 'Keralite' or 'Keralan.'
The next steps involve presenting the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 to the national parliament following endorsements from the state legislative assembly. The process is anticipated to proceed without major opposition, given the proposalās backing from various political factions.
