Scindia Criticises BSNL Director's Visit Demands as Inappropriate
India's Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia labels demands for BSNL director's visit to Prayagraj as absurd, issues show-cause notice.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has publicly denounced the extensive hospitality requests linked to BSNL Director Vivek Banzal's planned visit to Prayagraj, labelling them "absurd and shocking." In light of the scrutiny surrounding the demands, Scindia stated that a show-cause notice has been issued regarding the situation.

The issue arose when details of the proposed arrangements for Banzal emerged online. Critics expressed outrage over what they perceived as excessive entitlement and potential misuse of public funds. The controversial document outlining the hospitality requests included personal care items, such as toiletries, and had reportedly escalated into a significant backlash on social media.

As a result of the public outcry, which echoed Scindia's sentiments, the visit was eventually cancelled. Scindia remarked on the unacceptability of the arrangements, asserting that they violate established norms. In a statement to reporters, he declared that an order of this nature was inappropriate for modern India. He conveyed his disappointment by stating that they behave in ways no longer congruent with public service ethos.

The office order, which contained detailed plans for the two-day visit set for February 25-26, detailed an itinerary that involved nearly 50 personnel and outlined around 20 specific tasks. Among the highlighted activities were a ceremonial bath at Sangam, a boat ride, and visits to prominent temples, including the Bade Hanuman Mandir and Akshayavat.

Additionally, the order specified unique hospitality kits designed for both male and female attendees, outlining items such as towels, undergarments, and grooming products. It also required the provision of necessary items within accommodations, such as hotels and the Circuit House, where a diverse range of amenities would be expected.

In response to the controversy, BSNL took to social media to clarify that standard operating procedures govern their official visits. They acknowledged the breach of protocol and have stated that measures are in place to ensure adherence to established guidelines. BSNL emphasized that such incidents do not align with the professional standards inherent to the organisation.

As per BSNL’s communications, corrective actions have been initiated against those responsible for the oversight, alongside a reiteration of the importance of adhering to the existing conduct rules by all staff members.
