Google Employees Urge Company to End Ties with Immigration Agencies
Over 1,000 Google workers have signed a petition calling for an end to partnerships with US immigration agencies, citing safety and ethical concerns.

In a significant move that underscores growing tensions within the tech industry, more than 1,000 employees at Google have signed an open letter demanding the company sever its alleged relationships with federal immigration enforcement agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The letter articulates concerns that Google’s technology is being used to facilitate surveillance and operational violence against immigrant communities in the United States. In particular, employees have raised issues regarding the role of Google Cloud infrastructure in supporting the surveillance practices of CBP, as well as the company's involvement with Palantir Technologies, which reportedly provides analytics solutions to ICE.

Google employees referenced specific tragic incidents, including the deaths of individuals observed during federal enforcement actions, as evidence of the harmful consequences linked to the company's technology. They expressed a sense of moral obligation to speak out, stating, “As the people building these systems, we are deeply disturbed by how this technology is being used.”

The petition, titled "Googlers Demand: Worker Safety & ICE Contract Transparency," calls for full transparency regarding Google’s contracts with government entities. Among its demands, employees are requesting that the company provide protections for its workers against immigration enforcement activities and to hold a public meeting with leadership to address these pressing concerns.

Additionally, the letter criticizes the restrictions placed on apps within the Google Play Store that track ICE operations, alongside allegations that YouTube has hosted advertisements promoting ICE recruitment and messages advocating self-deportation.

The pushback from Google employees is part of a larger movement urging technology firms to reconsider their partnerships with government agencies involved in immigration enforcement. They contend that companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta have faced similar pressure and have been called upon to end their associations with these organisations as well.

The internal petition reflects a growing awareness among tech professionals of the ethical implications of their work. Employees are calling for urgent action, including the withholding of any technology that could be used by DHS, ICE, and CBP in harmful ways and advocating for laws that protect immigrant communities.

While Google has not publicly commented on the letter, employees highlight that previous actions, such as abandoning a contract with the Department of Defense in response to employee activism, demonstrate the potential for significant change driven by worker concerns.

As discussions continue within Google about its role in these contentious issues, employees remain hopeful that their voices will lead to a meaningful response from management.
