France Reports 2,025 Deaths During Severe Heatwave in June
Amid a record-breaking heatwave, France confirmed 2,025 excess deaths in late June, with warnings of more extreme temperatures on the horizon.

France has reported a significant increase in mortality attributed to a record-breaking heatwave experienced in late June. According to the Public Health France agency, there were 2,025 excess deaths during the last week of June, a 29% rise compared to the previous week. The deaths predominantly affected people aged over 45, highlighting a concerning trend among older populations.

The country faced its highest recorded temperatures on 24 June, with average national highs nearing 41 degrees Celsius in Paris. This extreme weather led to half of France being placed under a red heat alert, emphasising the severity of the situation.

As Europe braces for continuing high temperatures, weather forecasts predict that many regions, including parts of the United Kingdom, will experience elevated temperatures starting this weekend. BBC Weather analysts noted that a large area of high pressure is moving in from the Azores, expected to intensify heat in both France and southern Britain.

Across the Atlantic, extreme heat and high humidity continue to affect millions of Americans during the July Fourth holiday weekend, with parts of the central and eastern United States also grappling with prolonged heat conditions.

Research indicates that climate change is significantly accelerating temperature increases globally, with Europe warming approximately twice as fast as the global average. The Copernicus climate service reports that this surge in temperature is leading to more frequent heatwaves, increased strain on water supplies, and heightened wildfire risks across the continent.

Belgium has also reported deadly consequences from the heatwave, with 1,222 excess deaths; this represents a 39% increase above normal mortality rates, particularly among individuals aged 85 and older. Belgium's health ministry described the spike in deaths during this heatwave as unprecedented.

In France, the rise in fatalities occurred primarily between 22 and 28 June. Among the regions adversely affected, the capital Paris saw a dramatic rise in deaths — 62% more than usual. Officials in France have indicated that the numbers reported might still underestimate the full impact of the heatwave, suggesting that actual mortality could be higher.

Additionally, as heat conditions prevailed, drowning incidents increased. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez revealed that since 18 June, 72 drowning-related fatalities occurred.

In the Netherlands, about 480 excess deaths were recorded during the heatwave, primarily affecting the older population in areas experiencing temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius. While the Netherlands is anticipating a cooler week ahead, forecast models are predicting continued hot weather across various locations.

The forecast for France suggests temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the southern regions, including Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Agen, with peaks of 36 to 37 degrees Celsius expected. Météo-France has issued red alerts for Friday and Saturday regarding forest fire risks, stating that conditions are particularly conducive to wildfire outbreaks this summer.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu recently disclosed that nearly 7,000 wildfires had erupted since the onset of the summer season, burning approximately 8,700 hectares. Evacuations occurred in the town of Sainte-Marie-la-Mer after a wildfire spread.

Additionally, the Iberian Peninsula remains under scrutiny for potential further heatwave conditions. The Portuguese government has declared a state of alert due to anticipated temperatures surpassing 40 degrees Celsius, with overnight lows exceeding 25 degrees Celsius. Some regions in Spain are also under orange alert as extreme heat prevails.

As over 165 million individuals face extreme heat and humidity globally, temperatures are projected to remain around 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) for several days ahead.
