Amarnath Yatra Commences with PM Modi's Call for Cleanliness
The Amarnath Yatra has begun, with Prime Minister Modi urging pilgrims to ensure cleanliness and support local communities during the journey.

The Amarnath Yatra commenced amidst challenging weather conditions on July 3, 2026, as hundreds of pilgrims set off from key base camps in Kashmir. This annual pilgrimage leads devotees to the revered Amarnath cave shrine, located in the picturesque region northeast of Srinagar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a letter on the occasion, extending his good wishes to the pilgrims while stressing the importance of cleanliness and environmental respect during the journey. He urged participants to make their pilgrimage a symbol of hygiene, safety, and support for local livelihoods, noting that the journey could significantly contribute to nation-building efforts. The 57-day pilgrimage is expected to conclude on August 28. Prime Minister Modi described the Amarnath Yatra as a manifestation of India’s profound spiritual and cultural heritage. "Devotees from various regions anticipate the opportunity to partake in this pilgrimage annually. It represents a spirit of unity in diversity," he remarked. He commended the Amarnath Shrine Board, the Jammu and Kashmir administration, and the numerous security personnel who ensure the pilgrimage proceeds smoothly. He highlighted the efficient management of the event over the decades, citing contributions from various sectors including the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Border Security Force, National Disaster Response Force, medical personnel, and volunteers. Modi acknowledged the invaluable role of local communities, mentioning pony operators, porters, and palanquin bearers. Their hard work along the rugged mountain routes exemplifies India's tradition of selfless service, he added. The first batch of pilgrims was flagged off at the Baltal Base Camp in Ganderbal, accompanied by chants dedicated to Lord Shiva. Simultaneously, pilgrims were also dispatched from the Nunwan Base Camp in Pahalgam in southern Kashmir, travelling to Chandanwari via a designated shuttle service. Officials confirmed that extensive arrangements had been made to ensure a positive and enriching experience for participants at various crucial stations along the pilgrimage route.
