First Rafale Marine Jet Lands on INS Vikrant in Historic Trial
A Rafale Marine fighter jet made its inaugural landing on India’s indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, on 29 October. Completing the landing on its first attempt signifies a pivotal step toward integrating the aircraft into the Indian Navy's operational capabilities. The Indian Navy has been conducting extensive flight trials of the Rafale Marine in Goa. These trials are aimed at assessing the necessary modifications for effective operations from INS Vikrant, according to sources familiar with the proceedings. The objective is to validate the aircraft's compatibility with the carrier and prepare for its eventual deployment. On 28 April 2025, India signed an agreement valued at approximately ₹63,000 crore with France for the acquisition of 26 Rafale aircraft tailored for Navy operations. This deal includes the procurement of 22 single-seat fighters and four twin-seat trainers, alongside a suite of weapons, simulators, training, and logistical support. Deliveries are projected to be completed by 2030, with personnel receiving training in both France and India. Furthermore, the contract includes clauses for technology transfer, enabling the integration of indigenous weapons systems into the aircraft. The agreement also encompasses the establishment of Rafale fuselage production facilities within India, as well as maintenance, repair, and overhaul capabilities for engines, sensors, and weaponry. The incorporation of Rafale Marine jets is expected to fortify the Indian Navy's carrier-based air power, enhancing its capabilities for air defence and offensive operations against maritime and land-based targets. Currently, only the French Navy operates Rafale Marine jets, designed specifically for aircraft carrier missions. Their induction into the Indian Navy will enhance its combat capabilities within the strategically significant Indian Ocean region.
