ISRO Successfully Launches NVS-03 Satellite to Enhance NavIC System
ISRO's latest satellite launch strengthens India's NavIC navigation system, enhancing both civilian and strategic capabilities.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched the NVS-03 satellite, significantly enhancing India’s indigenous NavIC regional navigation system. This launch restores NavIC to its minimum operational configuration of four satellites. The NVS-03 satellite was placed into the designated injection orbit by a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket.

The NVS-03 is a second-generation navigation satellite equipped with both indigenous and procured atomic clocks. Its applications cover a wide range of civilian uses, including real-time tracking of trains, vehicles, and shipping vessels. V Narayanan, ISRO's chief, highlighted that the NavIC constellation plays a crucial role in the 'one nation, one time' project.

The satellite complements three other operational navigational satellites, including NVS-01. The restoration of the satellite system provides essential support for Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) services. Narayanan stated, "NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is a strategic national asset offering independent access to navigation services for both civilian and military use."

The GSLV rocket carrying the NVS-03 successfully lifted off at 11:51 PM local time from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Following an 18-minute flight, the satellite was efficiently separated from the launch vehicle and injected into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). Narayanan reported that all systems on the vehicle performed as anticipated.

This launch marked the GSLV's 20th flight and logged a turnaround time of just 56 days between missions. Nearly 80 per cent of the project budget has reportedly been invested in local industries, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering India's technological capabilities.

The NVS-03 satellite, weighing 2,232 kg, will utilise its onboard propulsion system to reach its final position at 32.5 degrees East. The satellite incorporates a Rubidium atomic clock, essential for enhancing India's regional positioning services. Signals will be transmitted in the L1, L5, and S bands, strengthening the overall system capacity.

Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, congratulated ISRO on the successful launch, noting it reflects India's growing expertise in space technology. He highlighted that this achievement aligns with the aspirations of India’s pioneering space visionaries, Vikram Sarabhai and Satish Dhawan, asserting, "Today is a celebration of another proud moment for India."

The NVS-03 satellite launch is considered crucial for bolstering India's navigation capabilities and signals a step forward in achieving strategic independence in this area.
