Helicopter Crash in Uttarakhand Claims Six Lives, Including Police Officer
A tragic helicopter accident in Uttarakhand has resulted in six fatalities, including police personnel from Karnataka.

A helicopter crash in Uttarakhand has resulted in the deaths of six individuals, five of whom were pilgrims from Karnataka. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon near Joshimath, a town in the Chamoli district. Among the deceased was Arun Salunke, an inspector with the Bengaluru Police's Central Crime Branch.

The helicopter took off from Badrinath, one of the prominent Hindu pilgrimage sites, but lost contact shortly after its departure. Eyewitness reports indicate that inclement weather, including severe rain and poor visibility, may have contributed to the accident. Uttarakhand, located in the northern part of India, is notable for its steep mountainous terrain and is home to significant Hindu shrines.

Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, confirmed that six bodies were recovered at the crash site. Following the incident, local authorities mobilised emergency services, including army units and police, to conduct search and rescue operations.

The passengers on board included Prathapa, a businessman from Hassan; Shankar Gowda and Sudheer K, both advocates; and H S Natraja, a poultry businessman. The pilot, Captain Himanshu, also perished in the crash.

The Karnataka state government is currently co-ordinating with Uttarakhand authorities for the repatriation of the deceased. A statement from the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority detailed the ongoing efforts to transport the bodies back to Karnataka promptly. The Office of the Resident Commissioner in Karnataka is closely working with local agencies.

Karnataka's Chief Minister D K Shivakumar expressed his condolences on social media, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. He shared that discussions are in progress with Uttarakhand officials to ensure a swift return of the mortal remains to grieving families. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara also conveyed his sympathies, pledging full assistance to the affected families.

Inspector Arun Salunke was reported to have taken a three-day leave to visit Badrinath, illustrating the personal impact of this tragedy. He hailed from Artal village in Belagavi district and was known for his dedication to duty and close relationships with his colleagues. His untimely passing has sent shockwaves through his community, with many residents mourning alongside his family.

Witnesses highlighted the bond between victims, particularly between Salunke and Gowda. Friends described them as inseparable, frequently travelling together on various outings.

In light of this incident, safety regulations for helicopter services used by pilgrims are expected to come under scrutiny. Concerns had already surfaced regarding aviation safety following previous accidents in the region, prompting calls for stricter oversight. The helicopter operated by Trans Bharat Aviation was engaged in pilgrimage-related travel, a service that has seen increased patronage in recent years as an alternative to difficult mountainous treks.

The region's challenges during adverse weather conditions have led to repeated warnings from the India Meteorological Department. Just prior to the crash, an orange alert had been issued for Uttarakhand, foreseeing thunderstorms and high winds.

As investigations continue, the local government has urged citizens to stay informed through official channels regarding updates on safety measures and future travel advisories.

This tragedy underscores the potential risks associated with air travel in mountainous regions and highlights the need for enhanced safety protocols to protect the lives of pilgrims who venture to these sacred sites.
