Elena Rybakina Withdraws from Cincinnati Open Due to Injury
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan has withdrawn from the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament held in Cincinnati, United States. This decision came during her match against Poland's Iga Swiatek, when Rybakina was trailing 4-1 in the opening set and could not continue due to an injury.
This defeat marks Rybakina's second loss to Swiatek in just over a week. The two players recently faced each other in the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto on August 13, where Swiatek emerged victorious with a decisive score of 6-2, 6-3.
Rybakina began her campaign in Cincinnati with a strong performance, defeating American player Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-4, in the opening round. She then progressed through her next matches, defeating Poland's Magdalena Fręch with a score of 6-4, 7-6 before securing another convincing win against Russia's Diana Shnaider, finishing 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth round.
The Cincinnati tournament held particular significance for Rybakina in terms of her WTA rankings. Following the unexpected early exit of world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, Rybakina had a chance to vie for the top position. As the second seed of the tournament, she was viewed as one of the leading contenders.
The overall prize for the Cincinnati Open champion amounts to 1,086,220 US dollars and includes 1,000 ranking points. Rybakina's withdrawal from the tournament prevents her from capitalising on this opportunity.
As per the Qazinform News Agency, the injury situation has raised concerns about Rybakina's performance in upcoming tournaments, given her recent competitive form.
