Imran Khan Returns to Adiala Jail Following Medical Examination
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has been returned to prison after undergoing a medical examination at a hospital in Islamabad.

Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was returned to Adiala Jail on Friday after a medical examination at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. This movement followed a Supreme Court directive that mandated an independent medical board to assess Khan's health.

Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023, endured his three-year imprisonment since being ousted from office in April 2022. His transfer occurred under strict security measures, with a significant police and paramilitary presence around the hospital. The decision to move him came after the Islamabad High Court received a report from the superintendent of Adiala Jail that detailed health issues concerning fluctuating blood pressure and anxiety, potentially exacerbated by limited family contact.

Officials had heard concerns from Khan's family and his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), regarding his health over the past year. Among the notable health issues raised is a complication with his eyesight. Despite previous judicial requests to allow hospitalisation, courts had largely maintained that he remain in prison, at times ordering assessments by medical boards instead.

The Supreme Court's order for transfer was issued after a report was submitted on August 21, detailing recommendations from a cardiac board that suggested immediate action regarding Khan’s medical condition. In compliance with the directives, government preparations for his hospitalisation had been underway for hours before the transfer was completed.

Khan's lawyer, Uzair Bhandari, indicated that the former leader is likely to remain hospitalised at least until his next court hearing, expected to be held on September 16. This stay in hospital represents Khan’s longest duration outside of prison since his detention began. The situation continues to highlight the ongoing legal challenges faced by Khan, as well as the implications for Pakistan's opposition movement, which has voiced concerns that the legal actions against him are politically motivated.

In light of these developments, the situation surrounding Imran Khan remains dynamic, as health and legal issues unfold in the context of Pakistan's turbulent political landscape.
