Donald Trump Issues Stark Warning to Iran Amid Khamenei's Funeral
US President Donald Trump issued a forceful warning to Iran on Monday, suggesting that either a diplomatic agreement must be secured or military action may ensue. This statement comes during the days-long funeral of Iran's deceased Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Speaking from the White House, Trump stated, "We're going to win one way or the other. We're going to either make a deal or we're going to finish the job—and it won't be tough to finish the job." He expressed a preference for negotiation, indicating that he wanted to avoid harming 91 million people living in Iran.
Trump emphasised that the United States has the capability to strike quickly, mentioning, "We can knock down their bridges in one hour." He also remarked on developments concerning Iran's nuclear capabilities, emphasizing that there should be no nuclear weapons in Iran’s possession. According to Trump, the US is determined to obtain what he referred to as the 'nuclear dust' from Iran, in reference to enriched uranium, indicating a desire for strong compliance with international agreements.
He noted the decline in oil prices, stating, "Oil is now at a level that, I think it's even lower (...) than it was before we started." Trump suggested that concessions made by Iran must be upheld, indicating a commitment to monitoring their actions moving forward.
Despite the ongoing ceasefire, which followed an interim peace deal signed last month, Trump has continued to assert pressure on Tehran. During the funeral of Khamenei, which took place on July 3, Trump perceived potential military implications, although he advised against taking immediate military action to ensure diplomatic channels remain open.
"One shot [and we can take them all out], but we are not going to do that because then we would have nobody to negotiate with," Trump remarked in an interview with Axios. He also expressed surprise at the large turnout for Khamenei's funeral, suggesting that many Iranians had opposed the late leader, stating, "Maybe it's fake tears."
In response, the Iranian embassy in Armenia condemned Trump's statements, asserting that the US lacks historical and civilisational depth. The embassy stated, "You killed Ayatollah Khamenei, but in reality, you broke a perfume bottle whose scent spread everyplace," emphasizing the significant public mourning over Khamenei's demise. The embassy further criticized the US for its inability to comprehend the depth of sentiments expressed during Khamenei's funeral.
As the geopolitical landscape evolves, concerns over Iran's nuclear programme and regional stability remain paramount, highlighting the delicate balance the US seeks to maintain amidst ongoing tensions.
