Croatia Coach Criticises Refereeing After World Cup Defeat to Portugal
Zlatko Dalic expresses frustration over refereeing decisions following Croatia's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup by Portugal.

Zlatko Dalic, head coach of the Croatian national football team, has voiced his discontent regarding refereeing standards during their recent 2-1 defeat to Portugal in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The match, held at Toronto Stadium on July 2, resulted in Croatia's exit from the tournament. Although Dalic highlighted his criticisms, he clarified that he did not wish to attribute the loss solely to officiating errors.

The encounter witnessed significant moments that influenced the game's outcome. After a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Portugal was awarded a penalty kick. Cristiano Ronaldo successfully converted the penalty to bring the match level before Goncalo Ramos scored the decisive goal in the final minutes. Tension mounted in injury time when Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol believed he had scored an equalising goal, but VAR ruled it out due to an offside infringement related to Igor Matanovic's position.

In his post-match comments, Dalic described the officiating as "very bad" but insisted on taking responsibility for his team’s performance. "I felt my team should have been awarded more free kicks," he remarked, adding, "We could have won this earlier."

Despite Croatia's loss, Dalic reflected on the larger implications of the match for the team and its veteran players. The defeat marks the end of an era for Croatia, especially for their iconic captain, Luka Modric, who is likely participating in his last World Cup. Dalic expressed his regret over this ending, saying, "This was probably his last World Cup, and I'm sorry that it ended this way."

Looking to the future, Dalic remained optimistic about the Croatian national side, noting the emergence of young talent. "I'm not afraid for the future of the Croatian team," he asserted. "We have a lot of young players coming in, and some of them showed quality today."

The Croatian team had previously enjoyed significant success, finishing as runners-up in the 2018 World Cup and third in 2022. However, they leave the 2026 tournament without a medal, marking a significant shift in their recent footballing fortunes. As for Dalic's future as coach, he admitted uncertainty, stating, "God knows what will happen in the next World Cup, but we'll talk about it in Croatia."
