Central Government Approves Common Secretariat in Amaravati
The Central Government has approved a ₹2,534 Crore investment for a new Common Central Secretariat in Amaravati, enhancing efficiency and coordination.

The Central Government has sanctioned the construction of a Common Central Secretariat in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, with a budget of ₹2,534 Crore (approximately £250 million). This significant development is part of a larger effort to streamline central government operations within the state.

Currently, various central government departments, including Income Tax, Goods and Services Tax, and others, operate from scattered locations and rented offices across Andhra Pradesh. The new facility aims to consolidate these offices into a single, integrated campus, akin to the Central Secretariat in Delhi, which seeks to bolster operational efficiency and provide better public service.

Officials indicate that the establishment of this central facility will facilitate quicker file movements, enhance interdepartmental coordination, and ultimately cut costs associated with renting multiple accommodations. This strategic move is expected to make the management of government services more effective, save taxpayer money, and support the ongoing development of Amaravati.

The announcement arrives as the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, along with leaders of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), have been vocal about their ambitions for the state's capital. Reddy has previously expressed concerns over the dynamics of capital allocation, proposing a multi-capital model that includes Visakhapatnam and Kurnool alongside Amaravati. However, he critiqued the financial implications of the Amaravati project, alleging that it is fraught with corruption and mismanagement.

“Instead of spending ₹2 lakh crore on Amaravati alone, even 10% of that could have created a functional capital and economic engine immediately,” Reddy stated in response to criticisms of the capital's declared status. His administration has previously indicated plans to tour various districts to engage with citizens and address their concerns regarding development and governance.

Despite the ongoing political discourse surrounding the capital status, the central government's decision to invest substantially in Amaravati suggests a commitment to fostering its potential as a key administrative hub. This investment reflects an ongoing partnership between state and central authorities aimed at driving economic growth and ensuring effective governance.

While tensions about Amaravati’s significance as the sole capital continue, the recent decision underscores the central government's authoritative stance on urban development strategies in Andhra Pradesh. As both government factions navigate this complex landscape, how these projects will evolve remains to be seen.

Furthermore, the recent legal affirmation of Amaravati as the only capital through the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, which has received the President's assent, further solidifies this position amidst ongoing debates about alternative capitals across the state.

As the situation develops, all eyes will be on how the construction of the Common Central Secretariat unfolds and its broader implications for governance and economic activity in Andhra Pradesh.
