Vaiko Calls for Halt to Fast Breeder Reactor Project in Kalpakkam
Vaiko, the general secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), has urged the Indian Union government to discontinue the 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor project located in Kalpakkam, citing safety issues associated with the facility. This appeal comes shortly after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on social media that the reactor achieved criticality on April 6, 2026.
In a statement released on April 8, Vaiko highlighted that the reactor has been under construction by the Department of Atomic Energy since 2004 and was originally expected to be operational by 2010. He expressed concern that the lengthy delay and the eventual announcement by the Prime Minister might signal unresolved safety risks that could pose dangers to the surrounding communities.
Vaiko's request sparks a renewed debate on nuclear energy projects in India, particularly in light of public safety. The Kalpakkam facility, which has a history of controversies and public scrutiny over its safety protocols, has now come under further examination following Vaiko's calls for abandonment.
This latest development underscores the ongoing tensions between nuclear energy advancement and safety considerations in India. As the nation assesses its energy needs and environmental commitments, the promise of nuclear technology continues to be weighed against public apprehension regarding safety standards and potential risks involved.
With debates intensifying, it remains to be seen how the Union government will respond to Vaiko’s plea and whether there will be any shift in approach regarding the fast breeder reactor initiatives moving forward. The situation highlights the delicate balance that must be struck in managing energy production while ensuring the safety and confidence of the public in such projects.
