BSNL Introduces Nationwide Voice over WiFi Service for Users
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecommunications provider in India, announced the nationwide launch of its Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) service on 1 January 2026. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity for users, especially in areas where mobile signals are weak.
The VoWiFi service allows customers to make and receive voice calls, as well as messages, using any WiFi network. It is designed to deliver clearer and more reliable communication in locations such as homes, offices, basements, and remote regions.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Communications highlighted that this service is available to all BSNL users across every telecom circle in the country. "This advanced service ensures seamless and high-quality connectivity even in challenging environments," the statement read.
VoWiFi operates on an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) platform, which facilitates uninterrupted transitions between WiFi and mobile networks. Users can make calls using their existing mobile numbers and standard dialer applications, thus eliminating the need for third-party apps.
The ministry further explained that the service is particularly advantageous for individuals residing in rural and underserved areas, provided they have access to a stable WiFi connection, which might include BSNL's Bharat Fiber broadband services. This feature is expected to alleviate network congestion, as it allows voice calls to be conducted over WiFi without incurring additional charges.
Shri A. Robert J. Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, addressed employees on New Year’s Day, expressing optimism about the company's future and emphasising the importance of the VoWiFi rollout as part of BSNL's ongoing network modernisation efforts. He noted that most modern smartphones support VoWiFi, and customers can activate the feature by adjusting their device settings to enable WiFi Calling.
The introduction of VoWiFi comes as BSNL prepares to launch its 5G services, following the completion of pilot projects and trials aimed at upgrading its 4G networks. This strategic move reflects BSNL's commitment to improving connectivity and service quality for its users, especially in areas that have been historically underserved by mobile network providers.
