Air India Pilot Detained in Vancouver Over Alcohol Concerns
An incident involving an Air India pilot has raised significant safety concerns after he was detained at Vancouver International Airport on December 23, 2025, just before he was scheduled to operate a flight to Delhi via Vienna. The pilot was reportedly observed by airport staff who suspected he had consumed alcohol, leading to a breathalyser test that he failed.
Incident Details
According to various reports, a staff member at the Vancouver duty-free shop either witnessed the pilot consuming wine or detected an odour of alcohol while he was purchasing a bottle. This prompted the staff member to alert Canadian authorities, who subsequently conducted a breathalyser test on the pilot. Upon failing the test, he was removed from the flight.
Despite this setback, Air India quickly arranged for a replacement pilot, and the flight, designated AI186, departed with only a two-hour delay. The aircraft then successfully reached Vienna, where another crew took over to continue the journey to Delhi.
Airline Response
Air India has confirmed the incident, stating, âFlight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi on 23 December 2025 experienced a last-minute delay after one of the cockpit crew members was offloaded prior to departure. Canadian authorities raised concerns regarding the pilotâs fitness for duty, following which the crew member was taken for further inquiry.â The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers and assured that it is fully cooperating with local authorities.
In their statement, Air India emphasised their zero-tolerance policy regarding violations of safety regulations, adding that any confirmed breach would result in strict disciplinary measures in accordance with company policy. The airline also noted that safety is their utmost priority.
Safety Protocols
Typically, pilots assigned to international flights do not undergo pre-flight breathalyser tests, as alcohol is served on board. Instead, these tests are usually conducted upon arrival to ensure that pilots have not consumed alcohol during the flight. However, Air India has implemented random pre-flight tests at international locations as a precautionary measure, particularly in light of this incident.
The aviation industry is known for its stringent safety protocols, and reports suggest that pilots often avoid using products containing alcohol shortly before flying to prevent any risk of failing a breathalyser test. A captain commented on the incident, stating, âForget drinking, we donât even use after shaves, perfumes, mouthwash or homeopathic medicines some hours before operating a flight.â This reflects the high level of caution exercised by pilots to maintain their flying credentials, as failing a breathalyser test multiple times can lead to revocation of their flying licence.
Passengers affected by the delay were provided with refreshments and assistance during the wait, highlighting Air Indiaâs commitment to ensuring passenger comfort in challenging situations. As the investigation continues, the airline remains dedicated to upholding the safety and well-being of its passengers and crew.
