India's First Bullet Train Set to Launch by August 2027

India is on the verge of a significant advancement in its transport infrastructure, with the inaugural bullet train expected to commence operations on August 15, 2027. The announcement was made by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Railways, during a recent briefing.

Project Overview

The ambitious Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor spans a total of 508 kilometres and aims to transform inter-city travel by introducing high-speed rail standards. With operational speeds reaching up to 320 kilometres per hour, the bullet train is projected to reduce travel time between the two cities to less than two hours.

Vaishnaw detailed the phased rollout plan, specifying that the first section to become operational will be the corridor from Surat to Bilimora. This will be followed by subsequent phases, including:

• Vapi to Surat
• Vapi to Ahmedabad
• Thane to Ahmedabad
• Finally, the full stretch from Mumbai to Ahmedabad

The minister remarked, "You can buy a ticket now itself, as it will be operational by 2027," adding a light-hearted note to the announcement.

Construction Progress

Significant progress has already been made on the project, with reports indicating that approximately 320 kilometres of viaduct work has been completed. The construction involves a combination of elevated structures, bridges, tunnels, and station facilities, all designed to meet world-class standards in collaboration with Japanese engineering expertise.

According to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), over 85% of the corridor will be elevated, and 17 out of 25 river bridges are already constructed. The Surat–Bilimora section is particularly advanced, with civil works and track-bed preparation nearing completion.

Future Developments

In addition to the bullet train announcement, Vaishnaw highlighted the success of the Vande Bharat Express, which has reportedly instilled a renewed sense of confidence in high-speed rail travel across India. The introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains is also on the horizon, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to inaugurate this service in January 2026.

Vaishnaw noted that the popularity of the Vande Bharat Express has led to numerous requests from Members of Parliament across the country for additional services, indicating a strong public interest in high-speed rail options.
