BJD MP Resigns from Parliamentary Panel over Comments on Biju Patnaik
Sasmit Patra of the BJD resigns in protest against remarks made by Nishikant Dubey about Biju Patnaik's legacy and alleged U.S. connections.

Sasmit Patra, a member of the Rajya Sabha representing the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), has resigned from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communications. His decision, made on March 28, 2026, follows disparaging remarks made by committee chairperson Nishikant Dubey regarding Biju Patnaik, a key figure in Odisha's political history.

Nishikant Dubey, speaking at a press conference on March 27, 2026, claimed that Biju Patnaik served as a 'link' between the United States government, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Dubey further alleged that Patnaik played a role in establishing the Charbatia air base in Odisha, which was reportedly used by American military operations.

Biju Patnaik is revered in Odisha as a two-time Chief Minister, holding office from 1961 to 1963 and again from 1990 to 1995. He was also known for his significant contributions during India's independence movement, including daring missions like flying into Jakarta to rescue Indonesian leaders in 1947, as well as participating in the Stalingrad Operation during World War II.

In his comments, Dubey asserted that the 1962 Sino-Indian War involved 'American money' and cooperation with CIA agents. He mentioned letters from Nehru, allegedly indicating that Patnaik was sent to the U.S. to discuss defence matters. Dubey stated that, 'Biju Patnaik, the then Chief Minister of Odisha, was a link between the U.S. government, the CIA, and Nehru.'

In response to Dubey's claims, Sasmit Patra expressed his dismay, stating that such remarks distort history and tarnish the reputation of a leader who is greatly respected. Patra shared his feelings of being 'deeply shocked and anguished' over what he termed 'outrageous, false, and irresponsible insinuations' made against Patnaik.

Patra announced his resignation from the parliamentary committee, emphasising that he could not continue serving under a chairperson who disrespects a national icon. He concluded his statement with a clear message: 'The legacy of Biju Patnaik ji will always stand taller than petty politics.'

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions in Indian politics over historical figures and their legacies, particularly in a nation where political narratives significantly influence public perception. This resignation adds to the discourse about the relationship between historical interpretation and contemporary political dynamics.
