Bangladesh Surpasses India in Per Capita GDP but IMF Forecasts Change
Bangladesh's GDP per capita surpasses India's, but the IMF projects India to regain the lead by FY29, highlighting economic challenges for both nations.

As of fiscal year 2026, Bangladesh's gross domestic product (GDP) per capita has surpassed that of India, marking a significant milestone in the economic landscape of South Asia. The latest data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) indicates that Bangladesh's GDP per capita stands at $2,886, in contrast to India's $2,750. This difference of $136 is noteworthy, especially given that India's economy is approximately eight times larger than that of Bangladesh.

The IMF’s World Economic Outlook report, released this week, suggests that Bangladesh will maintain a higher GDP per capita for the next two fiscal years. However, there is an expectation that India will regain its lead in fiscal year 2029, with projections predicting an increase to $3,662 in GDP per capita compared to Bangladesh’s anticipated $3,334 at that time. By 2031, the forecast gap is expected to widen to around $709, with India's GDP per capita estimated at $4,389 while Bangladesh's would reach $3,680.

Understanding GDP per capita is crucial, as it serves as an indicator of average economic output per person within a country. This metric is calculated by dividing a nation’s total economic output by its population. However, it does not take into account the distribution of income or the local cost of living.

When adjusting for purchasing power parity (PPP), a measure that considers the cost of living, the economic picture changes significantly. Under this measure, India’s GDP per capita is projected at $12,998 for FY26, compared to Bangladesh’s $10,884, reflecting a substantial 19.4% advantage for India. Historically, India has maintained this lead since 1994 and is expected to continue on this trajectory until 2031, with the gap potentially widening to 45%.

Despite Bangladesh's projected lead in nominal GDP per capita, it is essential to note that India is anticipated to remain the fastest-growing economy in South Asia during this period. India’s economy is forecasted to expand from $4.06 trillion in FY26 to $6.74 trillion by FY31, with annual growth rates estimated at 7.02% in FY27 and 6.81% in FY31. In contrast, Bangladesh's growth is expected to decelerate to an annual rate of 2.21% in FY28 before slightly improving to 2.97% by FY31.

The IMF estimated Bangladesh's GDP at $506.4 billion for FY26, with projections of $674.4 billion by FY31, indicating that the country’s ambition of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2034 could be overly optimistic based on current forecasts.

Additionally, it is important to understand that Bangladesh ranks behind several other South Asian nations in per capita GDP. The Maldives leads the region with a projected figure of $19,507 in FY26, while Sri Lanka and Bhutan follow with $5,062 and $4,933, respectively. Pakistan's estimated GDP per capita stands at $1,836, and Nepal is projected to have the lowest at $1,540.

In conclusion, while Bangladesh’s current lead in GDP per capita is notable, the forthcoming growth dynamics suggest that India may soon regain its position. Economic conditions influenced by inflation and international events, particularly the ongoing energy crisis, are critical factors that will shape the economic futures of both nations in the coming years.
