Australia Faces Pressure to Address Rising Antisemitism

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing mounting pressure from Jewish leaders and politicians to take decisive action against rising antisemitism in the country. The calls for action follow a recent violent incident during a Hanukkah celebration in Bondi, New South Wales.

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry condemned the attack as an example of "unfathomable evil". While acknowledging the government's commitment to combat antisemitism, they emphasised that concrete actions are necessary to protect the Jewish community.

Rabbi Moshe Gutnick, co-head of the organisation that coordinated the Hanukkah event, expressed frustration at the government’s lack of response over the past two years. He stated, "The government has done absolutely nothing to curb antisemitism," highlighting a sense of urgency for more effective measures.

The Jewish Council of Australia also voiced their distress, describing it as "shattering" to witness violence during the festival known as the Festival of Lights, which symbolises hope and resilience.

Liberal Member of Parliament Julian Leeser, who identifies as Jewish, has called on Prime Minister Albanese to implement the recommendations from a July report published by the government's antisemitism envoy. He believes that immediate action is essential to address the growing threat.

Labor MP Josh Burns, another Jewish representative, echoed these sentiments. He noted that while proposed gun reforms address the mechanics of the attack, it is crucial to confront the underlying issue of antisemitism. In an interview with ABC News, he insisted that the recommendations from the antisemitism report need to be expedited and brought to the table promptly.

In response to the increasing concerns, Prime Minister Albanese convened the National Cabinet on Monday. He expressed solidarity with Jewish Australians, stating, "We stand with Jewish Australians and we stand against hatred and violence." The Prime Minister also mentioned that the government is in the process of implementing some of the suggestions outlined in the antisemitism report.
