AAP Calls for Sonam Wangchuk as Education Minister Amid Protests
Aam Aadmi Party protests in Delhi call for Sonam Wangchuk as new education minister amidst demands for Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is voicing strong opposition to the current Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan amidst ongoing protests in Delhi. The protests, organised by a political satire group known as the Cockroach Janta Party, are demanding Pradhan's resignation due to concerns about educational governance. During the event at Jantar Mantar, AAP leaders, including national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, expressed their support for scientist and activist Sonam Wangchuk to succeed Pradhan as the new education minister.

Kejriwal made clear his position at the protest, stating, "Remove Dharmendra Pradhan, make Sonam Wangchuk the education minister." He further asserts that appointing Wangchuk to the role would be a significant step towards improving the country’s education system.

Saurabh Bharadwaj, an AAP leader who also participated in the protest, echoed these sentiments. He articulated concerns about the potential replacement of Pradhan by another Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) figure, suggesting alternatives such as Nitin Gadkari or Smriti Irani might be equally problematic. Bharadwaj urged, "Whoever comes next, it is possible that they might not turn out well, too. Don’t just replace Dharmendra Pradhan with Nitin Gadkari or Smriti Irani."

He underlined the importance of appointing a qualified individual like Sonam Wangchuk for the role, describing him as a figure of non-violent protest, aligned with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Wangchuk is currently on a hunger strike to draw attention to his demands, which have garnered considerable public support. Bharadwaj stated, "If you appoint a scientist like Sonam Wangchuk as the country's Education Minister, it will send a powerful message to the entire world…"

The Cockroach Janta Party has announced plans to march towards Parliament on Monday, calling on citizens to join the protest. Bharadwaj highlighted the need for a united front, inviting opposition parties, student leaders, and various social organisations to participate in the march.

When asked whether Kejriwal would join the upcoming march, Bharadwaj noted he had not discussed it with him but confirmed that other leading AAP figures, including Sanjay Singh, had committed to attending.

Kejriwal, during his visit to the protest, made references to the historical 2011 anti-corruption movement led by activist Anna Hazare, which played a pivotal role in his entry into politics. He warned the government to heed Wangchuk’s demands, or risk a public backlash similar to what the United Progressive Alliance faced after 2014.

Kejriwal remarked, "The Prime Minister is afraid that Wangchuk might do revolutionary things," illustrating the perceived threat posed by Wangchuk's activism to the current government. The political landscape is becoming increasingly charged as the AAP mobilises support for Wangchuk and poses significant challenges to the ruling BJP.

The outcomes of these protests and calls for governmental change will be closely monitored as they could signal shifts in education policy and broader governance in India.
