US and Iran Announce Agreement to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
The US and Iran have reached a preliminary deal to end hostilities and reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz, with a signing ceremony scheduled in Switzerland.

The United States and Iran have reportedly reached a significant agreement aimed at concluding the hostilities between them and reinstating maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport. The announcement was made by United States President Donald Trump during a brief update following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron as both leaders attended the Group of Seven summit in France.

Trump stated that an initial understanding had been digitally signed by both parties, although Iran has not formally confirmed this claim. According to US officials, the deal will be formally signed during a ceremony scheduled for this Friday in Switzerland.

Trump highlighted that vessels have begun to navigate through the Strait, specifically mentioning that many of these ships were loaded with oil. He noted the safety of the routes being employed, which traverse Oman’s territorial waters, a point of concern due to previous maritime threats in the area.

The agreement is set to lift the US naval blockade on Iranian ports and halt ongoing military actions. However, several more complex issues remain unresolved, including discussions surrounding Iran's nuclear programme and the financial sanctions imposed by the US on Iran.

A senior US official indicated that the deal initiates a 60-day period of negotiations that will aim to address these crucial matters. This period is expected to include talks regarding the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad and a potential reduction in hostilities between forces in Lebanon.

Markets reacted positively to the news, with stock prices rising and oil prices dropping conversely, a response likely linked to the anticipated increase in oil flow from the region if the strait's operations return to normal.

Although the US military advisory indicated that the blockade remains in effect until the signing ceremony takes place, it is anticipated that shipping operations could considerably resume once mine-sweeping operations conclude, estimated to take between 40 to 50 days.

In a joint effort to coordinate the reopening of the strait, the French and UK governments announced their leadership in the endeavour. The situation in the region has been tense, with both Iranian and US attacks on shipping lanes reported during the conflict, emphasising the strait’s importance as a strategic point in the ongoing geopolitical struggles.

US Vice President JD Vance noted that he will attend the upcoming signing ceremony, providing further assurance that the arrangements laid out in the memorandum of understanding align with both parties' goals for the future.

Overall, while the preliminary agreement marks a potential turning point in US-Iran relations, significant challenges remain, and the next few weeks will be crucial as both nations work through the finer points of the deal and the wider implications for Middle Eastern stability.
