A significant rebellion within the Trinamool Congress sees 19 MPs, including Yusuf Pathan and Shatrughan Sinha, opposing party leadership.

The political landscape of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is undergoing substantial upheaval as 19 Members of Parliament (MPs) have reportedly signed a list declaring their dissent against party leadership. This group includes notable figures such as Yusuf Pathan, Sayoni Ghosh, and Shatrughan Sinha. The rebellion poses one of the most significant challenges to the authority of party leader Mamata Banerjee since the TMC's establishment.

Sources indicate that the revolt has led to an alarming situation in both the Lok Sabha and the West Bengal Assembly. Presently, the TMC holds 28 seats in the Lok Sabha, with one vacancy following the death of Basirhat MP Haji Nurul Islam. The latest developments have effectively diminished Banerjee's support within the House to just nine MPs.

Instead of resigning from the TMC or aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the dissident MPs plan to function as a separate bloc supporting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This strategic decision is meant to circumvent disqualification under the anti-defection law. Given that the rebel faction comprises more than two-thirds of the party's MPs in the Lok Sabha, they possess the numerical strength to avoid disqualification under these rules.

The rebel MPs have informed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla of the formation of a new parliamentary bloc, which will be led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. There are indications that they will assert before the Speaker that Dastidar continues to serve as the chief whip of the TMC in the Lok Sabha. This assertion is expected to play a pivotal role in any forthcoming legal and procedural disputes.

The situation escalated on Tuesday with reports emerging about a meeting held by the rebel MPs at the residence of senior BJP leader Bhupender Yadav in Delhi. A photograph from the gathering reportedly included several MPs such as Sukhendu Shekhar Ray, Abu Taher, Asit Mal, Arup Chakraborty, Kalipada Soren, Jagdish Basunia, Prasun Banerjee, Sharmila Sarkar, and Satabdi Roy.

Additionally, sources within the party hinted that approximately 20 MPs convened informally at an undisclosed location in the capital recently. In response to the rebel list, officials loyal to Mamata Banerjee dismissed the claims, asserting that figures like Shatrughan Sinha and Dev Adhikari remain committed to the original party framework. It has been reported that Adhikari reaffirmed his allegiance to Banerjee publicly.

The emergence of this split within the TMC comes in the wake of another serious challenge—58 of the party's 80 MLAs reportedly defied Banerjee’s directive in the Assembly regarding the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition. This discontent suggests a broader dissatisfaction with the party leadership following disappointing electoral results.

In light of the unfolding crisis, Mamata Banerjee appeared to adopt a more conciliatory stance at a recent opposition meeting in Delhi, where various parties strategised on countering the BJP's influence nationwide. Political observers noted that Banerjee’s approach indicated a willingness to engage constructively as the TMC navigates through one of the most turbulent periods in its history. Speculation regarding a potential rapprochement between the TMC and the Congress has also gained momentum, suggesting the possibility of strategic alliances or even a merger.
