Zverev Advances to Second French Open Final After Victory Over Mensik
German tennis player Alexander Zverev is one step closer to claiming his first Grand Slam title after defeating Czech player Jakub Mensik in the semi-finals of the French Open. Zverev triumphed in four sets, securing a 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory on Friday.
This marks Zverev's second appearance in a French Open final, having previously faced defeat in major tournaments, including a loss to Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz two years ago at Roland Garros. "This is a Grand Slam, it's best of five, things are going to happen, opponents are going to play better. I managed it," said Zverev, demonstrating his composure under pressure.
In the final, Zverev will compete against either the 10th seed Flavio Cobolli or fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi. The 26-year-old has shown consistent form throughout the tournament, having only lost two sets in six matches, and enters the final in promising physical condition.
The semi-final match showcased Zverev's experience, as he faced Mensik, who was competing in a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time. The 20-year-old appeared fatigued, a result of his earlier two five-set matches in the tournament. As the match progressed, Zverev's superior stamina became evident, particularly in the second set, which he dominated with two breaks.
Mensik encountered difficulties early in the third set, calling for a medical time-out due to a suspected neck injury, but he managed to regroup and secured a break to take a surprising lead. However, Zverev quickly regained control in the fourth set, breaking Mensik and maintaining his lead to close out the match. Despite some disputes with line calls that drew ire from the crowd, Zverev ultimately claimed victory with a netted backhand from Mensik on match point.
As he looks towards the upcoming final, Zverev aims to end a 14-month title drought since winning a clay-court event in Munich in April last year. His journey through the tournament has not been without challenge, yet his focus remains on the final test ahead, where he hopes to secure his first Grand Slam title.
