Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the BRICS nations to take an active role in fostering peace amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Speaking at the BRICS summit held in New Delhi, Xi emphasised the bloc's potential as a mediator in the region's turmoil.

The summit features key members, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, alongside nations like Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This coalition was formed in 2009 with the aim of challenging the global dominance of the United States and its allies.

Xi noted that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East does not align with the collective interests of the international community. He underscored the necessity for BRICS to provide leadership and promote stability through collaborative efforts. "We must be proactive in encouraging peace and dialogue," he stated, as reported by state-run China Central Television (CCTV).

In his speech, the Chinese leader praised the BRICS group as a significant entity within the Global South and highlighted its role as an example of self-reliance among emerging economies. He urged member nations to focus on innovation-driven development to meet contemporary challenges.

China is set to take over the BRICS chairmanship next year and will host the 19th summit of the group. The anticipation surrounding China's upcoming leadership was noted by Xi, who remarked on the importance of unity and cooperation among member states to further the bloc's influence on the global stage.

The BRICS nations collectively represent more than 40% of the world’s population and nearly a quarter of the global economy, making their position vital in international affairs. As the world perceives shifting power dynamics, Xi's call to action may lead to renewed initiatives for peace in conflict-ridden areas such as the Middle East.
