Ceasefire Agreed in Oleshky Amid Ukraine's Humanitarian Crisis
Russia and Ukraine reach a ceasefire deal in Oleshky as humanitarian conditions worsen for civilians, allowing aid and evacuation efforts.

Russia and Ukraine have confirmed a ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, aiming to address the escalating humanitarian disaster faced by residents. The agreement, set to take effect from 27 October, is designed to facilitate the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid and preparations for civilian evacuations. This announcement comes from the White House, which noted that both parties agreed to halt military operations in the affected region. Conditions for civilians in Oleshky have deteriorated significantly, with reports indicating severe shortages of food, water, and electricity. An estimated 2,000 inhabitants remain in the city, some reportedly subsisting on foraged weeds and limited rations. Although both Russian and Ukrainian officials acknowledged a consensus on the ceasefire, it was revealed that Melania Trump played a role in brokering the terms between the conflicting sides. She stated, "Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine." However, the involvement of Melania Trump has raised questions, as preliminary efforts to establish a ceasefire had already been underway prior to her intervention. Ukrainian officials had voiced that Russia had previously rejected calls for a humanitarian truce. The call for a ceasefire has also been supported by Pope Leo XIV, who engaged in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as notable figures and organisations including the United Nations and the European Union. Ukraine has been actively pushing for evacuations from Oleshky and surrounding areas, utilising drones for airdropping emergency supplies. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's ombudsman, stated that operations to deliver aid and ensure civilian safety would address the pressing needs of all in the city. Alongside these efforts, concerns regarding the Starlink satellite network have emerged. Ukrainian forces have reported ongoing disruptions to this critical communication system, coinciding with recent public criticisms by Donald Trump and Elon Musk regarding Ukraine's military actions. The slowdown began after these comments were made, leading to a lack of clarity about the cause of the restrictions. Trump mentioned, "I've heard it was fixed, but if it's not, I’ll speak to him," in reference to Musk. Despite assurances, Ukrainian officials continue to report that no effective resolution has followed, with speeds capped at around 100 megapixels per second. Military expert Serhii Beskrestnov indicated that isolated reports of higher speeds may not be indicative of lifted restrictions. Ukrainian military capabilities have been hampered due to these limitations, curbing the use of drones crucial for offensive operations. The ongoing communication issues, alongside claims of a temporary suspension of intelligence-sharing by the United States, have strained Ukraine's relations with its ally. This diplomatic tension has been exacerbated by the US government's recent decision to lift sanctions on Russia and commence diesel imports from the country, a move attributed to Trump's efforts to manage energy prices ahead of upcoming elections. Recent maritime tracking indicates that tankers delivering Russian diesel to the US are already in transit. Concurrently, Russia has launched further military strikes against Ukraine, despite hints from the Kremlin about potential negotiations facilitated by the US, which are expected to resume next month. Previous discussions have not yielded significant progress, with both sides remaining far apart on key issues, including territorial integrity and military reductions. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently reiterated claims regarding Ukraine's sovereignty, characterising territories lost during conflict as belonging historically to Russia. His comments reflect long-standing assertions aimed at justifying the invasion that began in 2022. As the situation unfolds, the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky continues to necessitate urgent attention and aid.
