Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistan's PM Shehbaz Sharif discuss their enduring friendship and regional peace efforts during a meeting in Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met on May 25, 2026, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The meeting highlighted the longstanding ties between the two nations, with Xi referring to their relationship as an 'unbreakable' friendship. He praised Pakistan for its role in mediating peace efforts in West Asia amid ongoing regional tensions.

During the discussions, President Xi acknowledged the enduring partnership between China and Pakistan, stating, 'No matter how the international situation changes, China always prioritises the development of China-Pakistan relations in its neighbourhood diplomacy.' He expressed a desire to strengthen collaboration between the two nations, particularly in economic, trade, and security sectors.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who described the two countries as 'iron brother' nations, highlighted Pakistan's commitment to fostering bilateral ties. He noted that the countries share a profound relationship that is integral to their foreign policies. Sharif's visit coincided with a critical moment in regional diplomacy, where Pakistan has been increasingly involved in mediating talks related to the US-Iran conflict.

Accompanying Sharif was the Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who has played a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue in the region. The Prime Minister commended China's support for Pakistan's mediating efforts, indicating that positive momentum has been achieved in ongoing discussions.

The meeting comes as both nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, reflecting a history of mutual trust and cooperation. In earlier talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Mr. Sharif called for a unified approach to address current crises, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving sustainable peace in the Gulf region.

Sharif expressed gratitude for China's consistent support towards Pakistan’s national development and economic stability. He reaffirmed Pakistan's resolve to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals and investments within the country. Discussions also covered future cooperation in advanced technologies, space exploration, and mutual economic initiatives, marking a significant transition to a new phase of their partnership.

A series of memoranda of understanding and cooperation agreements were signed, addressing a wide range of fields, including trade, investment, education, and climate change. These agreements aim to bolster bilateral cooperation and to further integrate China’s economic strategies with Pakistan’s development goals.

The meeting underscored the strategic importance of China-Pakistan relations in regional and international contexts, paving the way for enhanced collaboration in resolving global challenges and promoting stability in West Asia.
