India Achieves Fourth Place at Asian Games 2026 Through Late Success
India secured a commendable fourth place in the medals tally at the Asian Games 2026, thanks to a late surge in key sports, notably boxing, archery, wrestling, and hockey. This performance comes after a challenging start, where initial setbacks were noted in shooting and athletics.
The first week of competition was particularly difficult for Indian athletes, as shooters, who had clinched seven gold medals in the previous Games, failed to make an impact in the individual rifle and pistol events. However, a remarkable recovery ensued, culminating in a gold rush that brought India back into contention for medals.
At the conclusion of these Games, India is expected to collect a total of 85 medals, including 21 golds. This is a decrease compared to the 106 medals and 28 golds achieved in the 2022 edition, held a year later in Hangzhou. Although India remains in fourth place, it trails the leading nations: China, Japan, and South Korea.
While early performances disappointed, notable achievements came from unexpected quarters. Shooter Neeru Dhanda made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a trap gold in the Asian Games. Additionally, she partnered with Kynan Chenai to secure gold in the trap mixed team event, enhancing India's medal tally significantly.
The Indian women's recurve archery team delivered another historic moment by defeating reigning champions South Korea, securing their first gold in this event. Individual golds also came from Kumkum Mohod in the recurve event, further solidifying India’s strong performance in archery.
Boxing contributed significantly to the country's medal count, with Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen, and Ankush winning gold medals, showcasing an unprecedented level of success in this discipline compared to previous Games.
Wrestling, having not secured any golds in Hangzhou, bounced back to earn two gold medals in Aichi-Nagoya through Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal, both in men’s freestyle categories, adding to India's robust finish in the latter part of the competition.
In cricket, the men’s team triumphed over Pakistan in a high-stakes final. The men’s hockey team also met expectations by claiming the gold medal, but notable was the success of the women’s hockey team, earning their gold and marking the first time both men's and women's teams have achieved gold at the Asian Games.
Overall, while Indian athletes faced early challenges, their ability to stage a comeback and secure significant medals in the latter stages of the Games reflects their resilience and competitive spirit. As the competition comes to an end, India aims to maintain its strong position in the medal standings, matching Uzbekistan for gold medals, aided significantly by standout performances across various sports.
