West Bengal IPS Officer Transferred After Religious Controversy

In West Bengal, Bushra Bano, the additional Superintendent of Police for Kharagpur, was transferred on Monday to the position of deputy commandant of the West Bengal Armed Police. This decision came shortly after she posted a video on social media in which she used phrases like "Assalamualaikum," "Inshallah," and "Jazakallah." The video, shared on September 13, detailed how the Residential Coaching Academy at Aligarh Muslim University assisted her in preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination.

Following the video’s release, the Hindu Legal Fund, a right-wing organisation, lodged a complaint with the home secretary of West Bengal. The complaint specifically took issue with Bano's use of the aforementioned phrases and noted a lack of traditional patriotic expressions such as "Vande Mataram" and "Jai Hind." This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the intersection of religion and public service in India.

Bano received significant criticism from various social media platforms, where accounts such as The Jaipur Dialogue and Sudarshan News targeted her statements. The latter suggested a narrative implying a potential bias in the civil services, framing it as a form of “UPSC Jihad.”

Bushra Bano has a notable academic background, having been born in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district. She earned a PhD in management studies from Aligarh Muslim University and had previously taught as an assistant professor in Saudi Arabia before returning to India.
