Vinesh Phogat's Comeback Attempt Ends at Asian Games Trials
Vinesh Phogat’s aspirations for a comeback at the Asian Games trials came to an unexpected halt on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. Returning to the mat almost two years after her exit from the Paris Olympics, the accomplished wrestler faced a challenging competition.
Competing in the 53-kilogram category, Vinesh Phogat started her day positively, securing a decisive victory against Jyoti with a score of 7-1. However, her journey took a downturn in the semifinals where she faced Meenakshi Goyat. In a bout characterised by tension and interference from spectators, Vinesh lost 4-6, leading to her early exit from the trials.
Vinesh initially appeared hesitant, conceding a point to Meenakshi for passivity. Meenakshi quickly took advantage, building a 4-1 lead through strategic pushes out of bounds. Despite a momentary comeback where Vinesh gained two points from a takedown, Meenakshi responded effectively, thus maintaining her edge. An attempt by Vinesh to challenge the outcome late in the match resulted in a marginal narrowing of the score to 6-4, yet the result remained unchanged.
The semifinals were not free from controversy, as both competitors received vocal support from their respective fans, creating a charged and combative atmosphere. After her bout, Vinesh, with a determined expression and raising her hand in a gesture of defiance, vowed, "I will be back," indicating her commitment to future competitions.
Meenakshi Goyat's success led her to the finals, but she too could not secure a victory. In a subsequent match, Antim Panghal defeated Meenakshi 2-3 in another contentious bout where Meenakshi expressed frustration at the decision, resisting attempts to leave the mat.
Earlier in the day, Vinesh Phogat's most formidable test came from a comparatively unknown opponent, Nishu, who executed an impressive open throw for a four-point gain. Vinesh managed to recover, eventually winning the match 7-6, although the close score raised concerns about her readiness for more competitive challenges ahead.
Following the trials, the final Asian Games wrestling team was announced. The 53kg category was filled by Antim Panghal, while other selections included athletes such as Dipanshee (50kg), Manisha (57kg), Mansi Ahlawat (62kg), Nisha Dahiya (68kg), and Priya (76kg). In this cycle of competitions, Vinesh’s journey serves as a pivotal learning experience, both for her and the broader wrestling community in India.
