Valve to Discontinue Physical Steam Gift Cards by 2026

Valve Corporation has announced that it will cease restocking physical Steam gift cards at retail locations, marking the beginning of a gradual phase-out expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Once current stock is depleted, consumers will no longer be able to purchase physical gift cards in stores. The shift will leave digital Steam gift cards as the sole option for gifting funds on the platform.

The change was detailed in an update to Valve’s Steam Support Frequently Asked Questions section, which was noted by users on platforms such as Reddit. According to the updated FAQ, while retail purchases can still be made for a limited time, no further restocking will take place after existing supplies are sold out. Existing physical cards can still be redeemed, subject to local regulations, even after the discontinuation of retail distribution.

Valve has attributed this decision to the persistent issue of scam activities that have plagued the company despite numerous measures implemented over the years to combat fraud. The company noted that it has collaborated with retailers and law enforcement, issued prominent warnings about scams, restricted the redemption of Steam Wallet currency, and progressively limited retail availability of the cards. These actions have not eradicated the problem, as the company stated, ‘scammers have adapted,’ continuing to exploit gift cards as a means for fraudulent activities affecting Steam users and others.

The physical Steam gift cards were introduced in 2012, with digital gift cards following in 2017. Moving forward, the digital cards will be the primary channel for gifting on the platform. Digital gifting options, which include guest checkout, will continue unaffected. This transition coincides with broader warnings regarding gift card scams issued by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which has consistently highlighted tactics where victims are pressured into surrendering codes.

By phasing out the retail distribution of physical gift cards, Valve aims to eliminate a channel that is frequently targeted in these schemes while still providing digital Steam Wallet capabilities for users wishing to purchase or gift funds within the Steam ecosystem.
