US Sanctions 17 Entities, Including Indian Trader, Over Iran Oil Dealings
The US has imposed sanctions on 17 entities, including an Indian trader, for illicit oil trade with Iran, aiming to disrupt Tehran's funding for its nuclear programme.

The United States government has sanctioned 17 entities, including an India-based trader, as part of its ongoing efforts to combat the illicit oil trade with Iran. The sanctions were announced by the US Department of State, which accused these entities of facilitating financial flows that support Iran's nuclear programme.

The sanctioned Indian entity, TR6 Petro India LLP, is alleged to have imported over $8 million worth of Iranian-origin bitumen between October 2024 and June 2025. The US Department of State stated that this trade was knowingly conducted and contributed to Iran's ability to fund its nuclear ambitions and support terrorist activities.

In its formal announcement, the US Department of State highlighted the importance of these sanctions in curbing the financial resources available to the Iranian regime. “Today, the Department of State is designating 17 entities, individuals, and vessels to stem the flow of revenue that the Iranian regime uses to advance its nuclear program,” the statement read. The US has accused Iran of exacerbating conflicts in the Middle East and obstructing maritime navigation through its oil sales.

The sanctions are part of a broader strategy by the US to hold accountable those involved in the transport and sale of Iranian oil. The Treasury Department also imposed sanctions on an additional 41 entities, individuals, vessels, and aircraft believed to be involved in Iran's illicit petroleum and petrochemical exports.

The US government has made it clear that it will continue to take actions against what it refers to as “dark fleet operators” and other maritime service providers that facilitate Iranian oil trade. The sanctions reflect the US commitment to disrupting the financial networks that support Iran's military and destabilising activities in the region.

As part of the sanctions, all property and interests of the designated entities within the US or under the control of US persons are now blocked. Transactions involving these entities are prohibited unless specifically licensed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

This crackdown comes at a time when Indian refiners are navigating changing global energy compliance requirements. For instance, Reliance Industries, a major Indian refiner, has announced it will cease using Russian crude oil in compliance with European Union sanctions, indicating the dynamic nature of international oil trade regulations and the impact of geopolitical tensions on market practices.

The situation continues to develop as the US remains vigilant in its approach towards Iran's oil exports, which are seen as critical to the regime's operations and regional influence.
