US Deploys JASSM-ER Missiles Amid Tensions with Iran
In response to escalating tensions, the US is deploying JASSM-ER missiles with a 930 km range for operations against Iran.

The ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran are anticipated to escalate further, with reports indicating that the US has decided to augment its military presence by deploying additional long-range missiles to bases involved in operations against Iran. According to a report by Bloomberg, nearly 82% of the US military's Joint Air-to-Surface Missile–Extended Range (JASSM-ER) inventory will be committed to this engagement, significantly reducing the number of these missiles available globally to approximately 425.

These developments follow recent statements made by former President Donald Trump, who issued warnings to Iran regarding a potential peace deal. He specified a timeframe for negotiations, asserting that Iran must respond within 48 hours or face heightened military actions. Trump stated, "Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out - 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to GOD!"

The JASSM family, including both long-range and shorter-range variants, has been manufactured by Lockheed Martin since 2001. The JASSM-ER is specifically designed for extended range air-to-ground strike missions. This missile system is lauded for its ability to target high-value and well-defended installations from long distances, allowing aircrews to engage targets while remaining protected from enemy air defence systems.

Key specifications of the JASSM-ER missiles include a range exceeding 500 nautical miles (approximately 930 km), compatibility with a range of aircraft including the F-15E and F-16 fighter jets, as well as the B-1B, B-2, and B-52H bombers. The missile carries a 1,000-pound penetrating blast-fragmentation warhead, optimising its efficacy against fortified targets.

Reports indicate that US operations have utilised over 1,000 JASSM-ER missiles in the first four weeks of the conflict. This figure was disclosed by a source familiar with the operations who requested to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of military activities. Additionally, it was noted that US aircraft had engaged in operations, firing 47 missiles during an incident targeting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Although a substantial number of JASSM-ER missiles are now earmarked for the Iran conflict, officials have stated that this commitment does not guarantee their deployment in every instance. The strategic intent appears to be focused on maximising deterrence while ensuring operational readiness in the face of potential threats.
