US Halts Military Strikes on Iran Amid Growing Diplomatic Pressure

The United States has suspended its airstrikes on Iran following a series of bombardments that had lasted nearly two weeks. This decision comes in light of reports indicating a depletion of US weapon stocks, particularly air defence interceptors. The standoff began when a ceasefire, brokered by Islamabad, collapsed, resulting in escalating tensions in the region. Since pausing its operations, Washington has not conducted any airstrikes targeting Iranian positions, leading to a subsequent halt in Iranian retaliatory measures against US military assets in countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan.

Despite the cessation of strikes, the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil transit, remains a focal point of tension. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported incidents involving six vessels attempting to navigate an ‘illegal and unsafe’ route through the strait, which Iran claims is under its jurisdiction. One vessel reportedly encountered an accident, prompting a return to Gulf waters.

An Iranian military spokesman, Mohammad Akraminia, confirmed the cessation of retaliatory actions, stating, “Our strategy has essentially been retaliatory. We have also halted our retaliatory operations.” The pause in military exchanges between the US and Iran has prompted a drop in global oil prices, which fell approximately 4% following news of the halt.

The US military has maintained its naval blockade of Iranian ports, asserting that it remains in full effect without elaborating on the reasons for halting the strikes after 13 consecutive nights of military activity. Analysts believe the pause may have been influenced by pressures from both domestic and international stakeholders to seek diplomatic solutions amid escalating costs.

The Strait of Hormuz had already been at the centre of increasing hostilities, especially following an agreement between the US and Iran, which had aimed to keep shipping routes accessible during ongoing peace talks. However, disagreements regarding control and navigation paths led to Iranian aggression against vessels straying into those areas. Diplomacy regarding the reopening of the strait is reportedly ongoing, with Oman facilitating discussions.

Further complicating regional dynamics, the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a vital passage between the Arabian Peninsula and Africa, faces shipping disruptions due to Houthi attacks on vessels related to Saudi Arabia. In a separate incident, a Ukrainian strike on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea has added another layer of tension between Tehran and Kyiv.

Iran’s Supreme Leader has set the cessation of Israeli operations in Lebanon as a prerequisite for any peace arrangement with the US. US officials have indicated that the current halt in strikes could create space for further negotiations. US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz remarked, “What the president is doing right now, as we’ve seen all along, is giving some talks some space.”

Economists have noted that the renewed conflict had caused spiralling costs, with crude oil prices rising significantly. This economic pressure partly led to the pause in hostilities, emphasising that both sides now have vested interests in seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict. The combination of economic sanctions and military actions has severely impacted Iran’s economy, noted Nader Habibi, an Iranian-American economist, highlighting long queues for essential goods like gasoline in Iran.

As both nations grapple with the fallout from their militaristic strategies, there appears to be a mutual incentive to reassess their priorities in favour of dialogue and potential de-escalation, given the unprecedented costs involved.
