US Deputy Trade Ambassador Rick Switzer to Visit India for Talks
The United States Deputy Ambassador for Trade, Rick Switzer, is scheduled to visit India on December 10 and 11 as part of ongoing discussions between New Delhi and Washington to finalise a comprehensive trade agreement. This visit, confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a media briefing, will not only serve as a familiarisation opportunity but will also include meetings with senior officials from the Indian government.
Randhir Jaiswal stated, "The new deputy US trade representative, Ambassador Rick Switzer, will be visiting India on the 10th and 11th of December. This visit is a familiarisation visit, as well as to meet with senior officials in the government of India." Both nations are focused on achieving a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial multi-sectoral financial trade agreement, with several rounds of negotiations already having taken place.
Commerce Secretary Sunil Agarwal expressed optimism regarding the discussions at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Annual General Meeting on November 28. He stated, "I think our expectations… we are very optimistic and very hopeful that we should find a solution within this calendar year." This sentiment reflects a shared commitment to advancing trade relations despite previous challenges.
Initially, the goal was to complete the first phase of the agreement by autumn 2025; however, this timeline has shifted due to recent changes in US trade policy, including tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. The US government enacted a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports effective from August 1, with an additional 25 per cent increase later announced, citing India's ongoing purchases of Russian oil as a contributing factor.
The proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) aims to significantly increase bilateral trade between India and the United States, from the current USD 191 billion to USD 500 billion by the year 2030. The initial announcement of these talks took place during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Washington earlier this year.
India has previously entered into 14 Free Trade Agreements and six Preferential Trade Agreements and is actively negotiating further partnerships, including with the European Union, in an effort to broaden its global trade footprint.
