Smriti Mandhana Returns to Training After Wedding Cancellation
Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana has made headlines after returning to her training regimen just a day after announcing the cancellation of her wedding to musician Palash Muchhal. The couple's wedding festivities had already begun, with events such as the haldi, mehendi, and sangeet celebrated publicly. However, on December 7, it was revealed that the wedding had been postponed indefinitely, prompting widespread speculation regarding their relationship.
In an Instagram story, Smriti Mandhana stated, "Over the past few weeks, there has been plenty of speculation around my life and I feel it is important for me to speak out at this time. I am a very private person and I would like to keep it that way but I need to clarify that the wedding is called off." She emphasised her commitment to her career, stating, "I believe there is a higher purpose driving us all and for me that has always been representing my country at the highest level."
Just a day after her announcement, Mandhana was seen back in training, focusing on her cricketing skills. Her brother, Shravan Mandhana, shared a picture of her during a batting session, which quickly circulated on social media. Fans expressed admiration for her dedication, with comments such as, "Queen for a reason" and "Dedication."
Palash Muchhal, also addressing the situation, took to his Instagram to express his intention to move forward. He described the emotional toll of the situation, particularly in light of the public's reaction to the controversy surrounding their relationship. Muchhal remarked that it has been "very difficult" to witness people react to what he termed "baseless rumours about something which has been most sacred to me."
The couple's wedding was initially scheduled for November 23 in Sangli, Maharashtra. However, it was postponed due to a serious health crisis involving Mandhana's father, who was hospitalised shortly before the ceremony. Reports also indicated that Muchhal experienced health issues linked to stress.
In the days following the postponement, hope arose that the wedding could be rescheduled, but no further announcements were made, leading to increased speculation. Both parties began removing photographs and videos related to their pre-wedding festivities from their social media accounts.
Rumours of infidelity involving a third party surfaced on various platforms, but neither Mandhana nor Muchhal has publicly confirmed these allegations. Muchhalâs official statement denounced the rumours as "baseless."
As Mandhana prepares to focus on her cricketing career, she is set to compete in a five-match T20 international series against Sri Lanka from December 21 to 30, which will take place in Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram. This series is viewed as significant preparation ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup next year. In addition, Mandhana will lead the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the forthcoming Womenâs Premier League, commencing January 9 in Navi Mumbai.
Amid this tumultuous period, Mandhana has received support from her teammates, with Jemimah Rodrigues notably withdrawing from the Womenâs Big Bash League to stand by her side during this challenging time.
