US Considers F-35 Sale to Turkey Amid Regional Security Concerns
US President Donald Trump lifts sanctions on Turkey and mulls F-35 fighter jet sale, raising concerns in Israel and India over regional security dynamics.

US President Donald Trump has announced the lifting of sanctions imposed on Turkey in 2020 concerning its acquisition of Russian S-400 air defence systems. He stated that Washington is considering selling the fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighter jets to Ankara. While the potential addition of these jets to the Turkish Air Force remains uncertain, the implications of this development are significant, particularly for Israel, which has long opposed such a sale.

The prospective inclusion of the F-35 in Turkey's military arsenal is being monitored closely in India as well, given Turkey's growing defence collaboration with Pakistan. The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an advanced aircraft designed for both air superiority and precision strike operations. However, the export of these jets is closely regulated by the United States, which evaluates sales based on technology security concerns and their potential impact on regional military dynamics.

In July 2019, Turkey was removed from the F-35 programme due to security fears surrounding the potential vulnerabilities the S-400 system could create for the F-35's stealth capabilities. In December 2020, sanctions were imposed on Turkey under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act for acquiring this Russian system. The current shift in relations represents a significant change in US-Turkey dynamics.

The announcement came during talks between Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, marking an effort to mend ties between the two nations. "Trump now wants to rebuild bridges with Turkey... so F-35s have become the military bridge between the two countries," explained Sandeep Unnithan, a defence expert and senior journalist.

The rift began in 2017 when Turkey approved the purchase of the S-400, leading to its eventual exclusion from the F-35 programme due to concerns that the system could be used to track and compromise the fighter jets. India, which also sought the S-400 system, faced potential sanctions but managed to secure an exemption from US Congress.

Trump's recent statements indicate a notable shift in view, stating that Turkey has been "much more loyal" and highlighting increased cooperation between Washington and Ankara. He remarked, "It's something certainly we'd consider. It's a great plane... the best plane by far," according to the Wall Street Journal.

The potential sale has raised alarms in Israel due to concerns that Turkey's acquisition of advanced military technology could upset the regional balance of power. In recent months, Israeli officials have expressed worries about Turkey's military involvement in the region, particularly its operations in Syria and new defence alliances with countries like Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vocally opposed the sale, warning that granting the F-35s to Turkey could significantly compromise Israel's military superiority. He described Turkey's government as a regime influenced by extremist factions and claimed that such a sale would enable Erdogan's ambitions for regional dominance. Netanyahu stated, “I don’t think they should be given F-35s... that’ll upset the power balance in the Middle East."

Amidst escalating tensions, the potential sale of F-35s to Turkey is indicative of shifting geopolitical realities. While this action may enhance US-Turkey relations, it poses considerable challenges for Israel and could influence broader strategic dynamics in South Asia, particularly relating to India's defence posture in light of Turkey's growing ties with Pakistan.
