US and Canada Trade Negotiators Meet Amid Tariff Deadline Approaching
High-stakes trade talks between US and Canada continue as new tariffs loom, with negotiators racing to finalise a deal before the Saturday deadline.

Top trade officials from Canada and the United States convened in Washington, D.C., on Friday for ongoing negotiations aimed at finalising a trade agreement before new tariffs come into effect. This session marks the third consecutive day of discussions, setting a crucial deadline for both sides. US President Donald Trump has indicated plans to introduce a hefty 50 per cent tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods if a deal is not reached by 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday. Experts suggest that even if an agreement is made, it is unlikely to see a full lifting of tariffs on Canadian products, as the situation represents 18 months of strained relations since Trump first imposed tariffs on key imports from Canada. This initial move prompted retaliatory measures from Ottawa, creating a cycle of back-and-forth tariffs between the two nations. In the latest round of discussions, Canadian Minister for Trade with the U.S., Dominic LeBlanc, has been engaged in talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Following a lengthy meeting on Thursday, LeBlanc noted the two nations were 'very close' to a deal, yet acknowledged that further negotiations were needed to reach a conclusive agreement. Despite this progress, opinion polls indicate that a significant portion of Canadians, about 56 per cent, prefer that Prime Minister Mark Carney does not make additional concessions during these negotiations. If an agreement becomes a reality, it is expected to reduce the top tariff on Canadian-made vehicles from 25 per cent to 15 per cent and cut tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium from 25 per cent to 12.5 per cent. Certain provinces, particularly Ontario, which is a key producer of steel and aluminium, are advocating for the complete removal of these tariffs. Additionally, Prime Minister Carney is encouraging provincial governments to eliminate restrictions on the sale of U.S. alcohol, another point of contention in negotiations. Wab Kinew, the Premier of Manitoba, expressed confidence, stating that Canada might hold a strategic advantage in the discussions. He commented, 'I think we’ve got the upper hand; they’re back on their heels right now. They’re coming to us for a deal and so I think we should fight.' It's important to note, however, that Canada represents only a fraction of the size of the US market, exporting approximately 70 per cent of its goods south of the border, which complicates its position in these negotiations. In a critical commentary on the situation, US Vice President JD Vance has directed mockery towards Prime Minister Carney, remarking that Carney’s approach fails to reflect the underlying realities of the negotiations. These remarks have intensified the focus in Canada for the government to avoid making concessions that may compromise national interests. As discussions continue, analysts suggest the intricacies of any potential agreement will play a vital role in how it is received by the Canadian public and governing authorities. Any conditions outlined in the deal regarding tariff exemptions could significantly impact the trade relationship under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The unfolding situation remains fluid, as both parties aim to strike a balance between national interests and economic cooperation in the face of looming tariffs.
